Information and society: Conference “Memory of the World in the Digital Age: Information preservation” in Canada

26 September 2012

September 26-28, 2012 in Vancouver (British Columbia, Canada) on the initiative of UNESCO is taken place conference, dedicated to the main issues of digital preservation of documentary heritage. The purpose of the conference is to improve digital preservation strategies, in particular, the detection of methods of its implementation in developing countries.

Today, more information is created and used in a digital form. However, such information may prove to be short-lived, it is easy to lose it, and that means that humanity may lose part of its heritage. Despite the adoption in 2003 of the UNESCO of a Charter on the Preservation of Digital Heritage, a deep awareness that the digital heritage can be irretrievably lost had not yet come.

The conference is attended by experts in the field of digital documentary heritage, government representatives and the information technology industry, rights holders and other interested persons. Their mission is to develop practical recommendations for sustainable access to digital information.
