Russian libraries: Sketches by Russian theater set designers from the collection of the Russian State Art Library exhibited in Moscow

11 September 2012

September 10, 2012 in Moscow, the Russian State Art Library (RSAL), opened "Two-Dimensional Theater: Sketches by Russian set designers from the RSAL collection" exhibition.

In 2012, the Russian State Art Library is celebrating its 90th anniversary. It was to this date that the exhibition was timed. It displays a unique collection of sketches of theater sets and costumes by national set designers from the 1970s to the 2000s. This includes the works of twenty artists from Moscow and St Petersburg, working not only in their theaters, but also in other Russian cities and abroad.

The exhibition includes both the "exhibit" and working sketches. Of extraordinary interest are “technological” albums. They bring together sketches of costumes and their development for each character in each scene play, images of authentic historical costumes of different eras.

The collection of theatrical sketches has been developed by the library from its inception. Even a small part of it, presented at the exhibition, suggests a high level of modern Russian stage design. The exhibition presents author's books, albums and catalogs with commemorative inscriptions of the artists whose works are on display.
