30 October 2012

U.S. Department of Energy has put into operation a new system of Titan, which provides processing capabilities for a wide range of research projects, such, for example, as forecasting of hurricanes or other natural disasters.

System Titan - an updated version of a pre-existing supercomputer Jaguar, opened in Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee. Based on the recent ranking of supercomputers, Titan - is one of the two most powerful supercomputers in the world. In the U.S. Department of Energy they say that Titan will have access to American scientists from the university environment, government laboratories and various commercial industries.

According to the latest list of 500 most powerful computers in the world, today the most powerful supercomputer system is Sequoia, worked at the National Laboratory of Lorenz (the USA). However, the power output is comparable to Titan Sequoia. The available power of Titan is 20 pet flops / s or 20,000 trillion operations per second.
