Information technology and society: Russia took two steps in the rating of the ICT development during the year

Russia's position in the rating of the development of information and communication technologies (ICT) in 2011 has improved slightly - the country has moved to 38th from 40th place, where it was located in 2010, according to the report of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), "Measuring of the Information Society".

The figures for 2011 for the ITU were provided by 155 countries. When calculating the rating of the ICT are use several indicators of the industry. In particular, indicators of access and development of the ICT-infrastructure, prices for communications services, investment in the industry.

Russia for several years is about the middle of the first hundred countries from which the ITU has received data. The second consecutive year, five leaders are the same. It is made by South Korea, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland and Finland. Traditionally, African countries close the rating.

Also from the published report it follows that Russia is on the 11th place on the income from the telecommunications industry, occupying a position between Spain and Canada. This ranking is led by the U.S. and Japan.

The head of the ITU Area Office for the CIS Orozobek Kaiykov said at a press conference that the most notable trend in the development of the ICT industry in the world is the development of broadband Internet access (broadband). Thus the mobile broadband is developing much faster than a fixed one.

According to statistics from the ITU for 2011, there are 2.3 billion Internet users in the world. Thus mobile Internet users are about twice as much as fixed.
