Languages of the world: Dictionary and Encyclopedia Day celebrated in Russia

November 22, the birthday of Vladimir Dal, Russia traditionally celebrates Dictionary and Encyclopedia Day. Philologists of the Vinogradov Russian Language Institute prepared for their professional holiday two basic editions - "Russian Spelling Dictionary" and "Grand Pronouncing Dictionary of the Russian Language."

The regions of Russia are holding events dedicated to this date. Thus, rare editions of the early twentieth century - Children Picture Dictionary in English and the famous encyclopedia "Britannica" - are displayed in the Bunin Regional Library, Orel, from 17 to 29 November. The exhibition shows the variety of reference books, especially interesting for public are dictionaries and encyclopedias on special subjects - architecture, sports, ballet, as well as mythology and philosophy.

The National Library of the Republic of Chuvashia there is a virtual exhibition "Dictionary and Encyclopedia Day."

The exhibition introduces one of the types of language dictionaries – explanatory dictionaries, which "explain" the word or its different meanings, if there are more than one, and demonstrate how to use the words, providing the explanations, where necessary, with examples are  taken for the most part from the literature.

The displayed dictionaries are the most important source for all those who value the ability to speak and write in fluent Russian, who is interested in the development of the Russian language.
