Culture and authorities: Meeting on the development and modernization of Russian museums held in Moscow

22 November 2012

The concept of the development of museum activities in Russia will be completed in December, and in January it will be discussed with representatives of the museum community. This timing was determined by the Minister of Culture of Russia, Vladimir Medinsky, speaking at a meeting on the development and modernization of museums in Russia, which took place November 21, 2012 at the Tretyakov Gallery, chaired by Vice-Prime Minister Olga Golodets.

The concept will focus on the conservation and study of museum collections, as well as the active development of the communicative functions of museums. "We believe that museums have to work with different groups of visitors - of all ages, with disabilities", - noted V. Medinsky. He recalled that, from 1 January 2013, all federal museums at least once a week will be open up to 21:00.

Olga Golodets reminded that today in Russia there are 2631 museums. Last year, the number of visits was 82 million.

"Museums should become centers of cultural life, and to become the centers, they need to be modern and technologically advanced", stressed Olga Golodets.

The meeting, which was held in the Vrubel Hall, the State Tretyakov Gallery, focused on the course of implementation of instructions, given by Russian President Vladimir Putin after the April meeting with representatives of the museum community in Saratov.
