Information technology abroad: Cray Company has developed the new supercomputer topology

11 November 2012

For its new supercomputer Cray Company has decided to completely revise the I/O system of individual nodes. The new supercomputer Cray XC30 has got a new system of interconnects called Aries, which presents a new routing topology, which should dramatically improve the internal bandwidth supercomputer.

In early 2013, Cray will release the supercomputer XC30, which will be the first of a XC-family. This machine concentration will be made exactly on the new architecture, which is in the bosom of Sray has been developed about six years. Aries new supercomputer system enables fast data transfer between different nodes of a supercomputer, even in those moments when supercomputers, equipped with the most advanced processors, will work with a high level of loading.

Inside, the XC architecture is also based on a new network topology, called Dragonfly, which integrates all the components of the supercomputer. Dragonfly is a direct topology that requires less optical cable and does not need external routers. Dragonfly is a product of joint development of Cray and engineers from the Stanford University.
