International events: Exhibition “The peoples of Russia, or the Description of customs, manners and costumes of the peoples of the Russian Empire” in Kiev

24 December 2012

December 21, 2012 the Russian Centre of Science and Culture in Kiev opened "The peoples of Russia, or the Description of customs, manners and costumes of the peoples of the Russian Empire". The event was attended by Russian Ambassador to Ukraine Mikhail Zurabov.

The exposition is based on materials of the illustrative album in French “The peoples of Russia, or the Description of customs, manners and costumes of the different peoples of the Russian Empire", which was published in 1812-1813s by a Bavarian envoy in Paris at the Russian court Carl Rechberg. The album, which is now kept at the State Pushkin Museum, has been very popular for a long time after publication, indicating the growing interest of Europeans in Russia in the early XIX century. The edition of "The Peoples of Russia" has long been a rarity, but art historians, local historians and artists still relate to him in his work.

After Kiev, the exhibition, prepared by Rossotrudnichestvo and the A. S. Pushkin State Museum, will be exhibited in Berlin, Paris, Brussels and Washington.
