Information technology and museums: Technology 3D to create three-dimensional images of monuments of science and engineering

December 11, 2012 a council of experts of the Polytechnic Museum dedicated to the research on program “Monuments of science and engineering in museums of Russia” took place. The purpose of the program is to identify, rank and certification of preserved in the country the outstanding works of engineering thought.

The event, held on the eve of the 140th anniversary of the Polytechnic Museum, was attended by the leading experts of research and museum organizations of Russia. Among the affected by the expert council themes are the uses of digitization, recording and unique technical objects. The Polytechnic Museum and the “Electronic Archive” Corporation presented a large-scale project on creation of museum 3D-collections.

As a result of the project the corporation developed a 3D technology, which would be used to create three-dimensional images, photos and 3D models of large-scale exhibits, as well as cinematic presentations in the Polytechnic University. According the Director on marketing of the ELAR Pavel Plotnikov, “created electronic collections will be the basis for a virtual museum and multimedia expositions, they will be used in the scientific, technical and educational purposes as well as will help to preserve engineering heritage for future generations even in case of loss of museum originals”. Participants of the council have agreed that the experience of the Polytechnic museum can be perceived as a methodological and to apply it in all museums of Russia.
