
International events: The Senate of New York has proclaimed April the Month of Russian-American history
The Senate of the legislative Assembly of the U.S. state New York proclaimed April 2013 the Month of Russian-American history. The corresponding resolution was adopted on the initiative of the Russian-American center “Heritage” (RARS), which mission is the preservation and promotion of Russian culture in the USA.
-Our goal is to “introduce” Russian history in America, to more Americans know how much Russians did for history and culture of the country. Children who were born here in the Russian-speaking families should know the history and could be proud that they are Russian Americans, - noted the president of RARS Olga Zatsepina.
As part of the Month of history New York will host the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Stalingrad. To the 70th anniversary of breaking the siege of Leningrad will be dedicated the play “My Poor Marat” by the legendary play of Alexei Arbuzov, staged by the American theatre Voyage Theater. During April it will be shown ten times in English and ten times in Russian.
Also during the month in New York will be celebrated many significant historical dates, including the 400 years since the founding of the Romanov dynasty, 140 years since the birth of composer Sergei Rachmaninoff, 120 years since the birth of the poet Vladimir Mayakovsky, half-century space flight of the first woman cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova, 130 years since the birth of one of the spiritual leaders of the Russian emigration, writer George Grebenshikov, the 90th anniversary of the foundation in the State of New York of the corporation of aircraft designer Igor Sikorsky. During the Month will take place the donation Russian archives Sikorsky.
One of the central events of the Month of history will be the holding under the RARS of the annual International Children’s Festival of Russian culture – the seventh. It will be held in the famous concert hall Symphony Space on Broadway. Besides, for the first time in the history of New York in Manhattan it will be held the street carnival.
For the first the Month of Russian-American history was celebrated in April 2012. RARS takes the initiative to make it an annual celebration.
