Exhibitions: Traditional exposition, dedicated to Shrovetide, opened in Saint-Petersburg

Already traditional mini-exhibition, dedicated to Shrovetide, opened at the Museum of the History of Religion (Saint-Petersburg) on March 1, 2013.

The basis of the exhibition consists of photographs, reproductions of pictures and postcards, illustrated traditions associated with Shrovetide.

One of the sections of the exhibition is dedicated to Shrovetide festivities. In Russia till XIV century Shrovetide was considered as the meeting of New Year, which since the ancient times of Slavs started in March.

Origins of Shrovetide traditions are from the celebration of the Day of Slavic the spring equinox. This is told on the second part of the exhibition. Here guests learn how the pagan God Velez and “forest host” Bear are related to the festival.    

Other sections of the exhibition illustrate the features of Shrovetide in Russia and counties of the Western and Eastern Europe.

The exhibition of the Museum of the History of Religion will allow visitors to plunge into the atmosphere of the old folk way of life.
