Information technology and archives: Documents of the Russian State Archive of Ancient Acts to be digitized

30 April 2013

The state starts the large scale project on creation a digital bank of genealogical documents.

Deputy Head of the Russian Archive Oleg Naumov at a press conference in Moscow said that the Federal Archival Agency created the electronic bank of documents to store genealogical information and the organization of access to it. These are the three million pages of documents from the Russian State Archive of Ancient Acts. Documents, books and landratskaya census and revision tales will be digitized and an electronic inventory of the respective fund will be created.

According to the head Michael Ryzhenkov, the digitization of the fund would solve several problems at once: to ensure the integrity of the original documents, to improve the systematization of genealogical information, to facilitate the work of archivists and to reduce the search time for researchers. As the Speaker of the project noted, the project, which started in RGADA, is unique, since most valuable documents of the XVIII century will be digitized, which are intertwined in large and very large volume. The books are digitized by scanners ELARA PlanScan, intended, inter alia, for the creation of electronic images of documents up to A2 format, including thick books and folios.
