World culture: The exhibition “Olympia: Victory over Time. Works by ancient and Western art from the collection of the State Hermitage Museum

April 16, 2013 in the Exhibition center “Hermitage-Kazan” opened the exhibition “Olympia: Victory over time. Works of ancient and Western art from the State Hermitage Museum”. About 300 exhibits from the collections of the State Hermitage Museum, presented at the exhibition, introduce to the history of the Olympic Games. The exhibition was the 11th exhibition project in the heart of the “Hermitage-Kazan”.

The appeal to the Olympics theme is particularly important in the run-up of the XXVII World Summer Student Games to be held in the Republic of Tatarstan in 2013. A significant part of the exhibits included in the exhibition, are on display for the first time. In the Hermitage’s Laboratory for Scientific Restoration and conservation of works of art have been re-restored many antique vases and sculptures.

Thematically, the exhibition consists of several sections. The ancient section provides: marble sculpture, painted vases depicting various kinds of athletic events, vessels that were used as prizes, bronzes, works coroplastics, glyptic, coins - which help to visualize the atmosphere of the Olympic celebrations.

The section, telling about the “revival” of the Olympic Games in Modern times and the appeal to the ancient traditions of art, in addition to paintings, prints and tapestries on classical mythological themes, features rare bibliographies, photographs, documents, Olympic medals and commemorative medals.
