Internet and society: The number of domains in the world during 2012 increased

VeriSign Company released a report on the state of the domain industry. According to the company, at the end of 2012 there were estimated more than 252 million domain names.

The fourth quarter of 2012, there were over 6 million domain names. This year the number of domain name registrations worldwide grew by 11.8%, or 26.6 million, told the Verisign.

Slightly less than half of the total number of domain names in the world is the names of the domains .com and .net: today the two domains have 121.1 million registered domain names. The growth in the two domains, which, in particular, are managed by Verisign, for the year, was 6.4%. The extension of domain names in the .com and .net in the fourth quarter of 2012 occurred in 72.9% of cases, the company noted.
