Internet and society: The National domain .RU was registered 19 years ago

The national top-level domain of Russia .RU was registered 19 years ago – on April 7, 1994. On this day, a record on the opening of the Russian Internet space was included in the international database of national top-level domain, supported by accredited by the Assigned Numbers in the Internet (IANA).

The administration and technical support of the national domain .RU was assigned to the Russian Research Institute for Public Networks (RIPN). Then the Coordination Group of a domain .RU was formed.

The Coordination Group in 1999 decided to change the schema of the domain name registration .RU. The RIPN, remaining the Technical Center of the national top-level domain .RU, transferred the registration of second level domain names to independent companies. The first such registrar in 2001 under an agreement with RIPN became its subsidiary RU-CENTER.

In 2001 it was established the Coordination Center for national domain of the Internet. Its founders were the Regional Public Center of Internet technologies (RPCIT), the Internet Providers Union (IPU), the Association of Documentary Networks (ADN), the RIPN.

The administrator of national top-level domains .RU and .РФ is today the Coordination Center of the national domain of the internet. It has the power to develop rules for the registration of domain names in. RU and .РФ, registrar accreditation and research of future projects related to the development of Russian top-level domains. The main objective of this organization is to provide reliable and stable operation of DNS-infrastructure of the Russian segment of the Internet.

Today in the zone .RU it is registered more than 4, 47 million domains.
