Memorable dates: The Day of Slavonic writing and culture celebrated

May 24 is considered to be the day when two Byzantine educators – Cyril and Methodius – created the Slavonic alphabet. This year this significant event marks 1150 years. In Russia and abroad the anniversary will be marked with a variety themed events associated with the historic mission of the Slavonic writing in the development of the civilization.

The 1150th anniversary of Slavonic Literature is celebrated on May 24 in almost all regions of Russia. As part of the celebration there will be exhibitions, concerts, conferences and other events. The large-scale celebrations take place in Moscow and other cities of Russia and the world.

Unique book monuments will be presented in Izhevsk at the exhibition “Writing - the great gift of descendants” which opens on May 24 at the St. Michael’s Cathedral. These are handwritten, printed and fax Cyrillic samples in Old Slavic, Old Russian languages. A special section is devoted to the books in Russian, intended for the Udmurt people, including “Primer for Votyak children”, dated 1892 year, “The original Russian language textbook for Votyaks”, released in 1912, and others.
