13 May 2013

Until 29th of June, 2013, the Russian State Library (Moscow) holds the exhibition "The Atlases and Maps from the Private Collections of the Royal Family Members".

Visitors can see the editions belonging to His Imperial Majesty's Library at the Winter Palace, to the libraries of Anichkov and Strelna (Constantinovsky) Palaces, as well as cartographic editions of the private libraries of the Empress Alexandra Feodorovna (the elder), Emperors Alexander II and Nicholas II, the Grand Duke Mikhail Nikolaevich with bookplates of their respective owners.

Cartographic collections as part of the private libraries of the Royal Family shows the profound understanding and diversity of the interests of their owners; in addition to the cities’ plans and educational geographic atlases thematic mapping works could be seen at the exhibition: the ethnographic, geological, and mining maps, maps of rail- and waterways, postal maps, statistics infographics, explications of the military parades and maneuvers.

Cards were rendered beautiful in elegant suits embroidered with silk, velvet, moiré, gold embossing, and morocco. Besides the high status of possessors, all these exhibits indicate a public awareness of cartography and the ranking of maps in society life at that time.
