Japan Government of has decided to create the world's fastest supercomputer, which will be about 100 times more powerful than today's best machines of this type. According to Tokyo media work is expected to begin in 2014.

As reported by the Tokyo media work is expected to begin in 2014. A supercomputer should start working in 2020. It is planned to allocate about 100 billion yen - more than a billion dollars for creation of such a device.

In 2011 in Japan the supercomputer "Kay" was created and put in operation by Fujitsu Limited Corporation together with the State Institute of Natural Sciences ("Riken"). It has a capacity of 15.1 petaFLOPS (that is equal to quadrillion calculations per second). "Kay" is composed of eighty-eight thousands eight-core processors, and it has been spent 112 billion yen (1.42 billion dollars) on its creation.

However, in 2012 this giant yielded the pas to American supercomputer "Sequoia" with 16.3 petaFLOPS performance. Then the first place was taken by the supercomputer Titan, which is located at the National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, USA. Its performance is 17.59 petaFLOPS.

Now Japan, whose supercomputer slipped to third place in the world, longing to regain the lead. The new device which will probably be created by Fujitsu Corporation again and said to be used for a wide range of tasks - from the development of new products, drugs and treatments to forecasting natural disasters.
