Exhibitions “History of the Royal Castle” and “Museum collections of the Konigsberg Castle. Works on search of cultural values lost during the war” opened on June 18 at the observation deck of archaeological excavations of cellars of the famous castle in Kaliningrad.
The “History of the Royal Castle” introduces visitors with unique building, laid down in 1255. “The exposition tells the story of the founding of Konigsberg, the historical past of the Royal Castle, including a “Great Embassy” of Peter I in 1697 and Russian governors of East Prussia during the Seven Year War”, - said the representative of the Kaliningrad Regional Historical- Art Museum Maria Teplysheva.
The second exhibition is connected with museum collections of the Royal Castle. Before the World War II here were stored royal regalia, a collection of amber and its products (in the war times – famous Amber Room), items of archaeology, a large collection of paintings, sculpture, weapon and uniform from all over the world.
The exhibition features search operations, which at different times were conducted on the territory of the castle. During the excavations there were found many architectural details, collapsed into the basement of the premises of the castle church and the Halls of Muscovites. During the entire period the collections of the Historical-Art Museum have been enriched with thousands of items related to the history of the castle of the XIV-XIX centuries.
The Royal Castle was destroyed in 1944 during the bombing of Konigsberg by British aviation. Finally, from the face of the earth it was demolished in Soviet times – in 1968. Archaeological excavations of the castle cellars have been organized since 2001.
