June 14 at the Novosibirsk State Local Lore Museum first opened the exhibition of icons of the Mother of God from the collections of the State Historical Museum.

The exhibition features more than 70 exhibits, including icons and liturgical objects depicting the Mother of God, created in the period from the XVI to early XX century. Symbolically, the opening of the exhibition coincided with the celebration of the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Novosibirsk diocese and the 100th anniversary of the Ascension Cathedral.

Icons and liturgical objects presented at the exhibition “The image of the Mother of God” compose several thematic blocks. The first room contains icons which depict the earthly life of the Mother of God: “The Nativity of the Mother of God”, “The Annunciation”, “Feast of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin”, as well as icons where the understanding of the Bible is taking place already with a Christian consciousness when the prophecies which seemed vague with a new point become absolutely clear.

The second hall demonstrates that the image of the Mother of God permeates everything that is in the temple. Here are presented the liturgical utensils and the iconostas, where the image of the Mother of God takes an important place. In addition, here you can see a broad range of revered Marian images: Our Lady of Vladimir, the Tikhvin, the Smolensk, the Kazan, the Tolga, the Theodore.

The exhibition will run till August 18.
