Information technology and history: The handwritten archive of Cardinal Newman to be digitized

7 June 2013

The handwritten archive of Cardinal Newman canonized by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010 to the saints contains about 200 thousand documents. The work on digitization of the heritage by Cardinal is planned to be held during three years. Currently, most of the archive is stored in a room of the Catholic Church of Birmingham. The digitization will be held by the specialists of the library of John Reynolds in Manchester in the room of the library, after which the manuscripts will return to Birmingham.

The project was initiated by the National Institute for Newman Studies, based in the United States. The project includes not only the digitization, but also the organization of documents into a single data set with the possibility of a different kind of search in it.
