To the 400th anniversary of the Romanov dynasty: The exhibition “The Romanov dynasty. The collection of the cabinet-engraved portrait from the private collection” in Moscow

7 June 2013

From 7 to 28 June 2013 the Alexander Solzhenitsyn House of the Russian Abroad (Moscow) presents the exhibition “The Romanov dynasty. The collection of the cabinet-engraved portrait from the private collection”, dedicated to the 400th anniversary of the Romanov dynasty.

All exhibited works are on display for the first time and they come from a private collection. The exhibition introduces the viewer with a collection of the cabinet-engraved portrait of the royal family, supplemented by an occasional engraved map of the Russian Empire from different historical periods and types of the two capitals - Moscow and Saint-Petersburg. The exhibition features the engraved plates of the XVII-XIX centuries, which by their rarity and artistic value are not inferior rarities collections of libraries and museums. The collection includes rare iconography and, in many cases, the lifetime engraved portraits of Russian tsars and emperors of the Romanov dynasty (from Mikhail Romanov to Nicholas II) and empresses. Due to the cabinet size of objects, the exhibition turned out to be a chamber one. To collect the material is of a great success, as the rulers’ lifetime portraits were engraved by special permission and did not have a large circulation.

The maps of the Russian Empire during the reign of the respective monarchs allow us trace the dynamics of the development and strengthening of the state. A collection put together a scientific approach to the quality of the material, its rarity and beauty, it shows the historical and cultural slice of time and reflects the relationship between epochs, through which the history of our country is passing.
