The opening ceremony of the first monument to the legendary Admiral Gennady Nevelsky - the remarcable Russian navigator and explorer of the Far East - took place in the city of Korsakov in southern Sakhalin.
According to the regional Ministry of Culture, "the monument is a joint project of the Government of Sakhalin Region and the Centre of National Glory of Russia; its installation is scheduled to the 200-th anniversary of the famed admiral’s birth ".
The monument was created in St. Petersburg by the famous sculptor Albert Charkin on demand of the National Glory Center. 4.5 meters tall monument consists of bronze on granite pedestal. It was installed in the Komsomolsk Park of Korsakov city’s downtown.
