Museums: The exhibition “Russian art: since ancient times to the early XX century” opened at the State Museum of Fine Arts of the Republic of Tatarstan

The State Museum of Fine Arts of the Republic of Tatarstan in the days of the Cultural Universiade presents a unique collection of Russian art, fully illuminating the history of Russia since ancient culture and ending with the pre-revolutionary period of the XX century.

In the collection of ancient art a special place belongs to the icons of the XVI century. There is a collection of icons from the Assumption Cathedral and Trinity Church, which once were in Sviazhsky by Pskov masters of the time of Ivan the Terrible. Of amazing beauty is the icon “Virgin Hodegetria” (the XVI century), which incorporates the traditions of the Byzantine school, and “The Old Testament Trinity” (the XVI century), transmitting unique skills of Novgorod painters. The icon “Our Lady of Kazan” (the XVI century), which had in antiquity mullion a loose way of one of the first lists revealed in the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, presents an outstanding historical and artistic value.

The exposition of the XVIII century includes works by such well-known portrait painters, as F. Rokotov, D. Levitzky, and V. Borovikovsky. Among the historical figures are portraits of Peter I, Catherine II. Along with state, official portraits (such as “Portrait of Empress Elizabeth” by German artist Georg Groth) are widely presented works of talented artists of the Provincial School - I. Titov, G. Ostrovsky.

One of the most important sections of the museum’s collection is a collection of Western European art, which includes paintings, drawings, and decorative arts of Holland, Flanders, Italy, France and Germany. In the collection there are real masterpieces of world art, they said at the press service of the Museum of Tatarstan.
