Information technology and the youth: The ITMO team is the World Champion in Programming ACM ICPC 2013

The programmers of the Saint-Petersburg National Research University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics have won the Championship of the World in Programming ACM ICPC 2013.

The final took place on Wednesday, July 3. The host of the championship was the ITMO itself. In total, the final was attended by 120 university teams. The finalists of the 2013 ACM ICPC suggested for five hours to solve 11 problems. The ITMO team correctly decided ten tasks.

Gold medals were granted to three more championship teams: the Shanghai and the Tokyo Universities and the National University of Taiwan.

The ITMO team won the ACM ICPC 2013 for the fifth time in the last ten years. Programmers from the University won the contest in 2004, 2008, 2009 and 2012. In 2014, the contest will be held again in Russia – the host will be the Ural Federal University in Yekaterinburg.

The ACM ICPC Championships is held annually since 1977. The general sponsor of the contest is IBM; the contest in 2013 was also supported by the Russian Internet company “Yandex”. Each team consists of three students. The tasks of the championship can be offered in C, C++ or Java.
