To the 400th anniversary of the Romanov dynasty: The exhibition “Learning bodily beauty” from the collection of the Peterhof State Museum Preserve in Tambov

August 7, 2013 the Tambov Regional Museum in the framework of the Year of culture in the Tambov region, in the pre-Olympic year, the eve of the Winter Olympics in Sochi, opens the exhibition “Learning bodily beauty” from the collections of the Peterhof State Museum Preserve.

The exhibition from the Peterhof State Museum is unique by its presented exhibits. It opens up a new, little-known, and certainly very relevant page in the history of Russia. Visitors, residents and guests of the Tambov region, interested in it, for the first time will see the most valuable rarities of national history and culture of the museum’s collection, including those from the “Special Storeroom” related to the Romanov dynasty, the activities of Peter I, Catherine II, Nicholas I, Alexander II and Nicholas II on “learning bodily beauty”.

The representatives of the Romanov dynasty for nearly three centuries has not left without their enlightened attention sports which played an important role in their lives. Memoirs, letters, archival documents, preserved everyday objects now allow understand how consistently and purposefully “worked on” many august persons, respecting the rules of healthy living. A diverse collection of Peterhof gives opportunity to talk about sports, popular in Russia in the XVIII - beginning of XX century, show the originality of historical sports equipment and, most importantly, to determine the “athletic” preferences of crowned holders. 

The exhibition features more than 300 unique items from the collection of the Peterhof State Museum Preserve and the Tambov Regional Museum.  

The exhibition will run till August 7 to December 2, 2013.
