Information technology and libraries: Digital Public Library of America to acquire documents from various US archives
The U.S. launched a project to digitize documents from various archives of the United States. They will be digitized and brought together in one place - Digital Public Library of America.
Researchers and scientists who study the history of the United States, will be able to access a single electronic archive of historical documents.
Digitization project is intended to enrich the library's collections with documents of various types, such as photos, newspapers, albums, handwritten letters and diaries. Currently, the library has about 4 million items, but the collection is growing quickly: about 500, 000 new documents per month. Such accelerated pace of replenishment is due to the fact that more and more American libraries join the project and deliver to the DPLA their digital collections. Also, important is the fact that the digitization of archival documents does not require approval of the copyright holders: all digitized documents have long been in the public domain.
