Libraries of Russia: The International conference, dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the opening of the Imperial Public Library, to be held in Saint-Petersburg

January 14, 2013 marks 200 years of the opening of the Imperial Public Library – now the National library of Russia (NLR). This solemn date is timed to the International conference, dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the opening of the National Library of Russia, which will be held from January 28-29, 2013 in Saint-Petersburg.

The conference is organized by the Interparliamentary Assembly of the Commonwealth of Independent States, the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, the National Library of Russia, the Russian Library Association and the Library Assembly of Eurasia.

The conference is held in the Year of Culture of the Russian Federation, announced by the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation on April 22, 2013.

The main objective of the International Conference is to draw public attention to the development of culture and the role of Russian culture in the world, searching for answers to modern challenges of the information society, the development of library of the CIS countries in order to preserve the historical and cultural heritage and access to it, the strengthening of international cooperation in the library the modernization and accessibility of information and knowledge by means of modern information and communication technologies.

January 28, 2014 the International Conference will be held in the Tauride Palace – the Saint-Petersburg residence of Prince Grigory Potemkin-Tauride, a monument of architecture of the XVIII century, which is now the headquarters of the Interparliamentary Assembly of States - members of the Commonwealth of Independent States. On the first day of the conference will be held ceremonial act on the anniversary of the National Library and the Round Table “Libraries as an important factor in the integration of the CIS” and the Opening of the exhibition.

The second day of the conference - January 29, 2014 will be held in the new building of the National Library, where the special meeting of the International Conference “The role of national libraries in social development” will be held.

To participate in the conference are invited the leaders and representatives of the libraries of the Russian Federation at all levels, national libraries and other CIS countries, the socio-professional library associations of the CIS countries, civil society organizations and creative unions; workers of science and culture.
