11 October 2013

October 11-12, 2013 at the Tsarskoy Selo State Museum-Preserve together with the Ministry of Culture of Russia is held the III International Scientific Conference “The World War I, the Versailles system and the modernity”. A particular attention will be paid to the role of Russia in the events of the World War I.

For the first time this conference dedicated to one of the largest wars in human history took place in 2009 at the initiative of the Faculty of International Relations, of the Saint-Petersburg State University. This year it will be held for the third time.

Among the organizers are also the Russian Military and Historical Society, the Saint-Petersburg State University, the Russian Association of historians of the World War I, the Institute of the World History of the RAS.

The event is attended by over a hundred Russian and foreign historians, representing major universities and research centers devoted to the study of world history of the early XX century. The work is organized in several sections, one of which will be entirely devoted to the role of Russia in the World War I.

The participants of the conference will discuss a wide range of issues dedicated to military, political, social, economic and other aspects of global conflict of the early XX century. The interdisciplinary nature of the discussions will take a fresh look at the stereotypes and to fill gaps related to understanding of the role of Russia in the World War I.

The consequences of the World War I did not just define the future course of the history. It was radically changed the system of international relations, as well as the balance of power in Europe and the world as a whole.

The World War I was one of the biggest events of the XX century, influenced the fate of many nations and peoples. Among the states, having felt the impact, was also Russia. In 2014 it will be exactly 100 years since the beginning of the World War I. Despite the robust date, the events of a century ago are still relevant, and their study helps to better understand the problems of the modern world.

As part of the conference will be held the presentation of the first in modern Russia museum of the World War I “Russian in the great War” – it is planned to be open in August 1, 2014 at the Tsarskoy Selo State Museum-Preserve (in the building of the State Martial Chamber).

There is no such museum in our country, which is dedicated to this period of history. The situation will be corrected with the opening of the museum “Russian in the great war” at the Tsarskoye Selo State Museum-Preserve. Originally, the Martial Chamber was designed by Emperor as a pantheon of the military glory. With the accession of Russia to hostilities of the World War I a part of the collection were trophies which were brought from the front. Thus, the Martial Chamber was formed as the Museum of the Great War. It was opened after the February Revolution of 1917, and alredy in 1918 it was closed.
