World history: The exhibition “Thracian gold from Bulgaria. Resurgent Legends” in Moscow

October 1, 2013 at the State Historical Museum in Moscow opens the exhibition “Thracian gold from Bulgaria. Resurgent Legends”.

The exhibition is dedicated to the culture of Ancient Thrace, and is held under the aegis of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation and the Culture Ministry of Bulgaria.

The exhibition demonstrates the magnificent works of art of international standard – archeological monuments between the 8th century B.C. and the 3d century A.D. from the sepultures of the highest Thracian aristocracy and from many buried treasures.

The exhibition features a large collection of ancient toreutics (art of making embossed artistic metal articles): different gold and silver vessels of various forms, and complete precious sets that are associated with various ritual ceremonies.

You will see unique jewelry, caparisons rich in ornament, weapons, ancient painted pottery, terracotta figurines, ritual purpose items made of gold, silver, bronze, iron, clay, marble and other materials. Many of the objects are decorated with images represented mythological subjects popular among the Thracians.

The exhibition sums up the hard work of Scientists in Bulgaria and Russia on the study of ancient history of Thrace and the northern Black Sea region. This joint exhibition project of the museums of the two countries is of great interest and is a great example of effective and fruitful collaboration between scientists, museum professionals and politicians of Russia and Bulgaria in the field of science and culture.
