20 November 2013

November 20, 2013 the Rudomino State Library of Foreign Literature and the Cervantes Institute in Moscow are organizing the grand opening of the exhibition “The Pacific - 500 years of history”.

The event is timed to the 500th anniversary of the discovery of the Pacific Ocean by Spanish explorer Vasco de Balboa.

The exposition consists of two parts: a bibliography – “The Sea of Books” and pictorial – “Pacific Ocean: a view of the artist”.

Book part of the exposition presents an overview of Spanish, Latin American and Russian editions of expeditions and travels across the Pacific and Latin America, which have access to the Pacific Ocean, with the opening of the South Sea by Vasco Nunez de Balboa to the present day.

There will be also presented books on the history and culture of the countries of the American continent, as well as works by major Latin American writers in the Spanish language and their translations into Russian. The exhibition brings together the Miguel Delibes library at the Cervantes Institute, the Institute of Latin American Library of Sciences and the State Library of Foreign Literature.

“Pacific Ocean: a view of the artist” - a joint project of Russian, Spanish and Latin American authors (painting, sculpture, installation) on the fate of Nunez de Balboa, the epic sweep of his expeditions to the New World, and the first meeting of Europeans to the Pacific Ocean, which marked the beginning a new phase of the Age of Discovery.
