18 November 2013

The Russian Academy of Sciences (Moscow) held a presentation of digital 3D-model of the Shukhov tower on Shabolovka, established as a result of laser scanning, and the ceremony of transfer of the Institute for the S. I. Vavilov History of Science and Technology for permanent storage in the Russian State Archive of Scientific and Technical Documentation.

The openwork design of the 150-meter radio tower located on the Shabolovka, since 1922 became a symbol of Soviet radio and television and has received the worldwide recognition. Now, a unique creation of an outstanding Russian engineer, correspondent member and honorary member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR V. G. Shukhov is in the pre-emergency status.

In connection with the 90th anniversary of the tower in 2012 and the 160th Anniversary Shukhov in 2013, the Institute of the S. I. Vavilov History of Science and Technology of the Russian Academy of Sciences) decided to create a digital 3D-model of the tower, as the only technology of virtual heritage (Virtual Heritage) allow you to keep complete information about unique objects for future generations.

In 2011 it was performed laser scanning of the tower from the ground and from the technological platforms at different levels of the tower. During the years 2012-2013 were performed 3D-modeling based on the results of laser scanning, as well as scientific and technical documentation kept in the archives of TsNIIPSK of N. P. Melnikov, the Archives of Sciences, and the archive of RGANTD “State Specialized Design Institute of Radio and Television” (SSDI RTV). The result is a precise and detailed 3D-model of the tower, as well as software tools to view it, which can be used for scientific and educational purposes.
