Russian regions: The XI Regional Art Exhibition “Big Volga” in Yoshkar-Ola

November 1, 2013 at the National Gallery of Art (the Republic of Mari El, Yoshkar-Ola) opens the XI Regional Art Exhibition “Big Volga”.

“Big Volga” is the so-called one of the largest regional associations of Union of Artists of Russia, including masters of fine arts in central and eastern European part of the country. The first exhibition of “Big Volga” was held in 1964 in the city of Samara (Kuibyshev). Since then, every five years, one of the cities of the Volga region hosts it. It has traditionally enjoyed great interest of the audience and the authority of the professionals, has considerable public outcry.

The exhibition “Big Volga-XI” is an important step in the implementation of large federal project “Russia”. Along with the exhibition “Big Volga” during 2013 are held inter-regional parades alternately in each federal district of the country. The best works will be exhibited in early 2014 in the largest exhibition hall in Europe, in the Central House of Artists in Moscow.

The eleventh regional traveling art exhibition “Big Volga” in 2013 is taken in Kazan, Perm and Yoshkar-Ola.

In Yoshkar-Ola the exhibition “Big Volga” is held for the first time. The grand exposition was placed on three major exhibition venues of the Republic of Mari El.

Introduced to the audience the exhibition includes painting, sculpture, graphics, posters, monumental, theater set design, folk and temple art and art history. It involves 859 authors from 13 regions of the Volga Federal District. About 1,200 works are exhibited.

In the past fifty years, the project “Big Volga”, which became legendary in many ways, has played a major role in the development of art in the region, had an impact on the lives of many creative artists of the Volga.
