Internet and society: The second Cyrillic domain .РУС to appear in the early 2014

The registration of the first domain names in the new Internet zone .РУС will begin in early 2014. This was reported in the press service of the Coordination Center for TLD (KC).

According to KC, the International Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has signed a contract with KC.

"New domain is supported by the representatives of Russian-speaking communities abroad, and it will help millions of Russian and Russian-speaking people around the world to create their own virtual space in their native language, to overcome the lack of communication, to find like-minded people", - said the director of KC Andrei Kolesnikov. According to him, Cyrillic domains are often used for promotional purposes: company create websites with Russian addresses to attract customers.

"According to my estimates, in the zone .РУС for 2014 can be registered up to 400 thousand domain names", - said the head of KC on work with registrars and users George Georgievsky. For comparison, in the zone .РФ, which appeared in 2010, is now registered 833 thousand domain names, in the .RU - 4, 9 million.

The first Cyrillic domain zone .РФ appeared in 2010. The first domains, which began work in the area .РФ on the night of 12 to 13 May 2010, became президент.рф and правительство.рф. The Russian domain zone has become the first area in the online world where the addresses of websites are not written in Latin, and in the national language. Today .РФ is among the twenty largest European Internet domains.
