Internet and society: Registration of domain names .москва and .moscow to begin in April 2014

Fund to promote technology and Internet infrastructure (FAITID) has signed a contract with ICANN's administration of top-level domains .москва and .moscow. Thus, the registration of domain names in the two metropolitan areas will begin in April 2014, the report FAITID said.

The right to first register a domain name will be received by holders of trademarks included in depository trademarks ICANN. Next on the fund plans will begin priority registration for trademark owners, protected on the territory of Russia. Also, their domain names in this period could register the owners of brand names, appellations of origin, the media and non-profit organizations in Moscow.

Others will be able to register the domain in September 2014 in the course of registration bonus, when the cost of domains will gradually decline. In November of the same year the phase of open registration begins at standard prices.

The project to create geo domains .москва and .moscow was initiated in 2010. Since 2011, the coordination of the project is carried out by FAITID supported by the Department of Information Technology in Moscow.
