International events: Exhibition “Religion and art of the Netherlands of the XVI – XVIII centuries” in Saint-Petersburg
December 3, 2013 at the Museum of the History of Religion (Saint-Petersburg) opened an exhibition “Religion and art in the Netherlands of the XVI – XVIII centuries”.
The exhibition features works by Dutch and Flemish art of the XVI – XVIII centuries from the collections of the State Museum of the history of religion. Most of these monuments are associated with the turbulent events of the Reformation, Counter-Reformation and the national liberation war.
The collection of paintings and rare books of the SMHR fully presents the development of religious life in the Netherlands of the XVI - XVIII centuries.
Due to specifics of the museum it predominantly collects paintings on religious subjects or dedicated to events from the history of Catholic and Protestant churches. Nevertheless, the exhibition also presents not only a religious but also secular art. A special place is occupied by the image of church interiors of Flanders and Holland.
The exhibition “Religion and art in the Netherlands of the XVI-XVIII centuries”, held within the framework of the year of Holland in Russia, will allow museum visitors to learn about important historical events and culture of the Netherlands.
