28 January 2014

The Non-Profit organization Wikimedia, responsible for the work of Wikipedia, as well as a number of other public projects, has announced the ability to add voice recordings of famous people to their biographies available in the encyclopedia.

The new project is called Wikipedia Voice Intro Project, or WikiVIP, and intends to catalog the most famous voices of people on the planet, tying records to their descriptions in the encyclopedia. In Wikimedia say, that this approach will allow a better understanding of the essence of the biography and the people in Wikipedia. Initially, the essence of the project was to create voice pronunciation of people's names. Later, the idea of adding voices to the biographical information appeared.

When the voice recording of the person is available, it will appear as a music player for brief curriculum vitae of the person. In Wikimedia say, that such an approach will only be applied to famous people - movie stars, scientists, politicians, journalists, presenters on television and etc.

For an initial set of base of votes, Wikimedia intends to cooperate with the BBC Voice Project. In the latter it has been promised to provide at least 300 records with the voices. Note that the BBC was first licensed their content to third parties. To date, only 133 samples of votes is uploaded.
