17 January 2014

The Bavarian State Library has offered users a free access to the largest electronic collection of books in the German-speaking area.

The digital library based on the fund of the Bavarian State Library (Bayerische Staatsbibliothek), is open to "visitors". A free access to more than one million digitized books is now available to web users worldwide, according to Broadcasting WDR. First of all we are talking about digital copies of books of the XVII-XIX centuries, which are not subject to restrictions related to copyright. According to the library, Munich has the largest collection in the German- digitized publications.

To get online access to publications can be possible through an electronic library catalog OPACplus. The library holds special sessions, in which everyone will develop skills to use digital catalogs and publications.

However, the progress of digital technology does not cancel the "ordinary" books". On the contrary, - CEO of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek Rolf Griebel emphasizes, - the purpose of our library is to develop both digital and print collections". It recently acquired a ten million-book. Every year the Munich library receives about 130,000 new titles.
