To the XXII Winter Olympic Games in Sochi: Exhibition “More than sport!” in Saint-Petersburg

The exhibition "More than a sport!" opens on February 7, 2014 at the Museum of Political History of Russia (St. Petersburg) and is timed to the beginning of the XXII Olympic Winter Games, which start in Sochi. This is the first museum in the study of the history of Russian sport and its importance in the socio-political and cultural life of the country. Sporting events, playing an important role in shaping the fashion and lifestyle of people has always been something more than just a competition and training, victory and defeat. The exhibition demonstrates the close relationship of sports with politics, ideology and culture.

Unique photos, documents, personal belongings, awards, sports uniforms and equipment reflect the history of development of Russian sports and public policy in the field of sports since the end of the XIX century to the present day.

The exhibition also presents items from the personal collections of famous athletes, sports cups of different years, objects of decorative-applied with art sports theme, porcelain and samples of Soviet textile of 1920s, sports phaleristics, associated with the history of the Soviet sports and athletics, the Olympic games, including GTO badge (1930).

Interactive and multimedia technology will take visitors in 1972, where they can witness the "Gold" hockey Super Series matches "USSR - Canada" as well as to complete one of the legendary historical chess game between B. Spassky and B. Fischer. Along with museum objects, the history of sports and sports place in human life will be presented by a video interview with our contemporaries, among them - Olympic champions, sports commentators and journalists, historians, sports fans and collectors. Also, visitors will be introduced to historical documents related to the preparation and organization of the Games of the XXII Summer Olympics in Moscow in 1980, which had long been classified as "Confidential".
