Museums of Russia: The Museum of an Architect Konstantin Melnikov will Be Found in Moscow

Russian Ministry of Culture has decided to establish the State Museum of Konstantin and Victor Melnikovs. The new museum will become an affilated branch of the A. V. Shusev National Museum of Architecture.

The Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation has issued an act amending the statute of A. V.  Shusev State Museum of Architecture on February 27, 2014, which subsidiary will appear as the newly founding State Museum of Konstantin and Victor Melnikovs. The purpose of this new museum is to put the unique heritage of the world famous Russian architect Konstantin Melnikov into cultural circulation and to preserve Melnikov House in 10 Krivoarbatsky Alleyway in Moscow.

"We act strictly within the execution of the great architect’s sone Viktor Melnikov, - says EB Milovzorova, Deputy Minister of Culture of the Russian Federation, and the Ministry’s of Culture of Russia decision is only the first step in a long and comprehensive work of creating the museum." According to V. K. Melnikov’s will, an additional space near the Melnikov House should be allocated for the museum. The museum with a permanent exhibition and a storage of Melnikovs’s collections will be located in a separate building on Vozdvizhenka Street, and the Melnikov House after restoration will become the sight of seeing.

To create a permanent exhibition at the Melnikov Museum more than 500 items from the Museum of Architecture collections will be transmitted: the models, an architectural drawings, photographs, films, an archival materials, as well as a fragment of a unique membrane structure of Melnikov House, saved during the restoration of the 1990s. Subsequently, the other masterpieces from the creative portfolio handing to the State according to Viktor Melnikov’s will, will replenish the exposition. Special section will be dedicated to him as to the keeper of the Melnikov House and an artist who has developed in such a unique architectural place.
