Memorable dates of Russia: Exhibition “St. Sergius of Radonezh. To the 700th anniversary of the birth” in Saint-Petersburg

4 March 2014

March 4, 2014 the State Museum of the History of Religion (Saint-Petersburg) hosts the exhibition “St. Sergius of Radonezh. To the 700th anniversary of the birth”, dedicated to the converter of the monasticism in the central and northern Rus’, one of the most revered Russian saints.

The exhibition, which was the first in a series of anniversaries, timed to the 700th anniversary of the birth of the holy ascetic, is based on the exhibits from the collection of the Museum of the History of Religion, the works of Artist of Russia Y. K. Lyukshin and held master-classes of works by students of Petersburg schools.

The unconventional solution of the exhibition space – children’s works, brilliant works of the famous contemporary master and monuments from museum collections – visualizes spiritual unity of the medieval Rus’ and modern Russia.

The exhibits are grouped in several thematic sections: Life of St. Sergius of Radonezh; his death, relics and posthumous miracles; reverence of St. Sergius of Radonezh; transformation of Russian monasticism; pupils and spiritual interlocutors of St. Sergius of Radonezh and monasteries based by him; the Holy Trinity Monastery.

These subjects illustrate unique monuments from the collections of the Museum of the History of Religion, many of which never exhibited, - icons, books, engravings, works of decorative art, works by masters of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra.

The exhibition will run till May 4, 2014.
