
Society and culture: Exhibition of icons of Saint George in Kolomenskoye
April 30, 2014 in St. George's Church of the Ascension on the square in Kolomenskoye (the Moscow United Museum-Reserve) opens the exhibition project "From spring Yegoriy to autumn Yegoriy".
The exhibition presents the icon of St. George, including alloy of the XVI - XIX centuries, books: Prologue and coins of Catherine's time, as well as photos of the church of St. George of the early XX century.
St. George – a Christian saint, but in Russia, he took a significant and very unique place in the culture, understood in the broadest sense.
In the lives, and iconography clearly favor the two faces of St. George: humble martyr, on the one hand, and, on the other - a formidable warrior, Victorious. St. George went into history as the Victorious; he became revered patron as angel of States Army, Russian peoples, families, children.
The memory day of St. Martyr George the Victorious was the main holiday of the Russian army. Exclusively for military bravery privates and noncommissioned officers were awarded crosses of St. George 4 degrees. Officers and generals were awarded gold "St. George" arms with the inscription "For Bravery".
The current course of church life, and to some extent, the state of life, as if shows that martyrdom and the heroic content simultaneously sublime image of St. George again becomes us closer horseman George, striking serpent, emblem of Moscow and became a symbol of the Russian state; gradually opening up previously closed churches in his honor, in Moscow in memory of the soldiers heroes of the Great Patriotic War, George's Church is built on Poklonnaya Hill.
