History and Culture: "The Gallery of the XIX Century Portrait" Exhibition in St. Petersburg

"The Gallery of the XIX Century Portrait" exhibition will be held in Rumyantsev Mansion (St. Petersburg) from April 16, 2014, to February 10, 2015.

The exhibition presents a historical collection of picturesque and sculptural portrait of the XIX century. The exhibits corresponds a generalized portrait of St. Petersburg society of the nineteenth century.

All included into the exposition works, whether these executed by the famous artists or unknown, regardless of their level of performance, reflect the artistic and stylistic features and aesthetic tastes of XIX century.

The exhibition shows the official formal portraits and the chamber ones. Unusually wide is a range of characters. The paintings, sculptural busts and statues depicted the House’s of Romanov members and the famous Russian surnames that left their mark in the country's history (Sheremetyev, Golitsyn, Vorontsov, Dolgorukov, Yusupov, Kurakin, Buturlins, Stroganoff, Razumovsky, Shuvalov, Vyazemskys, Musin-Pushkin); the community and government leaders, captains of architects, artists, writers and poets, as well as representatives of the St. Petersburg merchants, eminent citizens and simple residents of St. Petersburg, whose names remained unknown.

A group of 40 portraits painted in the XXl century, but depicting Russian statesmen of the times from Peter l to the reign of Emperor Alexander I, is complementing the exposition. The named are varied copies of the XVIII century portraits.
