Information and Society: "Cultural Heritage Shaping and Preservation in the Information Society" Exhibition in Moscow

"Cultural Heritage Shaping and Preservation in the Information Society: to the Year of Culture in Russia" exhibition runs in the reading room of the International Organizations Documents Center of Russian State Library (Moscow). The exposition is built basing on the publications of depository fund of the United Nations, the Council of Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States. The exhibition let an audience to get an idea of the nature of administrative work in the field of culture ongoing in parts and all over the world.

Presented at the exhibition documents reflect the problems of formation and preservation of cultural heritage in an era of unprecedented growth of information and determine the tasks associated with the digitization of cultural heritage, the use of languages in cyberspace, as well as an education, the acquisition of knowledge and skills in media and information literacy.

The centerpiece of the exhibition is documents and publications of the United Nations, as well as organizations and institutions that operate under the auspices of the UN. There are the declarations, conventions and recommendations of the UN, the main idea of which is the right of all peoples of the world to culture and to participate in cultural life, and that refers to cultural values as to the priceless heritage of mankind.

The documents of the World Summit on the Information Society, UNESCO publications, "UNESCO Normative Acts for the Cultural Heritage Protection" collection, UNESCO "Information for All" program materials, including publications reflecting the stages of implementation of the program in Russia, are also displayed for the visitors and the Russian State Library’s users viewing.

Special shelf is separated out for the documents and publications of the Commonwealth of Independent States. These exhibits are focused to the application of information and communication technologies (ICT) in higher education in the CIS and Baltic countries, tell about the way the Commonwealth to the open educational resources, share the experience of exchanging scientific and technical information between CIS countries and the role of national Commonwealth libraries in the building and the preservation of cultural heritage.

Among the publications of another international organization - the Council of Europe - "The Declaration on Human Rights and the Rule of Law in the Information Society", "Manual on Council of Europe Standards in the Field of Mass Media Contribution to Social Solidarity, Intercultural Dialogue, Understanding, Tolerance and Democratic Participation."

Dedicated to the preservation of linguistic diversity in the information society is another noteworthy section of the exhibition - it is mostly the UN documents.
