Society and culture: Exhibition of the Western European Art of the XVI-XIX centuries “Behind seven seals” in Yekaterinburg

3 April 2014

April 3, 2014 the Yekaterinburg Museum of Fine Arts opens the exhibition “Behind seven seals” which features Western European Art of the XVI-XIX centuries from the museum’s storerooms – paintings, drawing, sculpture.

The exhibition “Behind seven seals” starts a new project of the Yekaterinburg Museum of Fine Arts “The Museum opens its storerooms”.

The first exhibition of the new project presents about 40 works by European masters of the XVI - XIX centuries, including pictorial, graphic and sculptural works from different schools - Italian, French, Flemish, Dutch, English and German. Almost all the exhibits have been restored, as in previous years, and in anticipation of the exhibition.

The exposition feature is that presented works are in the process of scientific research and the attribution, so the authors of many of the pictures are unknown or questionable. The museum decided to show the works, which are copies or variations of the compositions of famous authors. However, the performance (XVI-XIX centuries) make them a kind of unique cultural and artistic artifacts that require research.

Visitors await genuine discoveries, as many works are exhibited for the first time. The main task of the new exhibition is to lift the veil of secrecy over the closed museum stores and attract the attention of visitors to fine, but rarely shown works,  almost forgotten or completely unknown.
