
History and culture: Exhibition “Solovki. Calvary and Resurrection” in the Sochi Art Museum
From May 9 to May 23, 2014 the Sochi Art Museum, the Solovki State Historical-Architectural and Nature Museum-Reserve, as well as the Solovki Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery with support of the Government of the Archangelsk region and the Sochi department of DOSAAF present the exhibition “Solovki. Calvary and Resurrection. Solovki Heritage in the past, present and future of Russia”. This is a multimedia project, dedicated the Solovki archipelago and its exceptional role in the national history and culture.
The exhibition is created in 2010 with the blessing of the Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus’ Kirill and was exhibited in Moscow, Saint-Petersburg, Archangelsk, Nizhny Novgorod, Sarov, Petrozavodsk, constantly enriched with new materials. The exposition included icons, paintings, copies of documents, films, photographs, authentic objects of the period of Solovki camp of Special Purpose. The tours are held by scientific specialists of the Solovki Museum-Reserve and the Solovetsky Monastery.
The project in a modern and accessible way using advanced educational technology is five centuries of history of the formation of a unique spiritual and cultural heritage of the Solovetsky Monastery in the XV-XIX centuries, its tragic fate in the past XX century and the modern revival.
On the background of six centuries of Solovki history the exhibition tells the story of about spiritual traditions, economic technologies, marine and military prowess, architecture, artistic decoration, literacy, as well as prominent people who created and defended the spiritual stronghold of the Russian North - Solovki.
