
Memory of Russia abroad: The first monument dedicated to Russian Emperor Peter III opened in Germany
In the German city of Kiel, on the Baltic Sea, took place the opening of the monument to Peter III by Russian sculptor Alexander Taratynova.
The sculptural composition is set in the Palace Park of the city so that the gaze of the bronze Emperor is focused on Saint-Petersburg.
The monument – is the first monument in Germany, dedicated to the Russia tsar. The initiative belongs to so called Royal society of Kiel (Kieler Zarenverein), which is engaged in the studying of biography of the Russian monarch.
Karl Peter Ulrich von Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf, going down in history under the name of Russian Emperor Peter III, was born in Kiel at the time when the city was the capital of the Duchy of Holstein, from the marriage of the eldest daughter of Peter the great and Duke Holstein-Gottorp from the dynasty of Swedish kings, and thus could immediately claim to the two thrones.
