To the International Children’s Day: Exhibition “Childhood Friends. Books-Jubilees 2014” in Saint-Petersburg

May 29, 2014 in the Korff Hall of the National Library of Russia (Saint-Petersburg) took place the opening of the book-illustrative exhibition “Childhood Friends. Book-Jubilees 2014”.

The exhibition presents the golden fund of the world of children's literature – publications of the XVIII - XX centuries from the NLR, celebrating anniversaries this year. Among the unique exhibits - the first classic English novel "Robinson Crusoe" by Daniel Defoe, who turned 295 years old and one of the first historical novel "Ivanhoe" by Sir Walter Scott, which celebrates 195 years. This year marks 120 years of "Mowgli" by Rudyard Kipling, 170 years - "The Three Musketeers" by Alexander Dumas, 80 years old - "Mary Poppins" by Pamela Travers.

Among the publications of Russian classics 180 years mark the last of Pushkin's fairy tales "The Golden Cockerel" and "The Little Humpbacked Horse" by Pyotr Yershov. Its 60th anniversary celebrates "Dunno" by Nikolai Nosov, and "The Three Fat Men" by Yuri Oleshi - 90 years.

Visitors of the exhibition can see the first edition of favorite childhood books, including "The Three Musketeers" by Alexandre Dumas (Brussels, 1844) "The Adventures Gekkelberri Finn" by Mark Twain (London, 1884), "The Little Humpbacked Horse" (St. Petersburg, 1834), "Chuk and Gek" by Arkady Gaidar (Moscow, Leningrad, 1939) and others.

The exhibition is prepared by the Department of Prints, funds of "Rossika" and "Polygraph", the Russian and Foreign book collections of the National Library of Russia.

The exhibition will run until June 15.
