History of a Book: Exhibition of English engravings and a book of English press of the XVIII-XIX centuries “This world of events…” in Astrakhan

31 July 2014

In the Engravings Office of the department of the foreign arts of the Astrakhan Picture Gallery as part of the Year of Culture of Great Britain and Russia takes place the exhibition of English engraving and book of English press of the XVIII – XIX centuries “This special world…”.

The exhibition project presents a picture of the development of Russian culture and the main artistic trends over the past two centuries - from the social criticism that characterizes the Enlightenment, to free imaginative solutions of the Romantic period.

The exposition included samples of collection of prints in the art tool, etching, mezzotint and woodcut executed by British artists-engravers, including publishing projects, reflecting the legacy of the British school of drawing and watercolors, reproduction proofs with paintings of the London National Gallery.

An integral part of the artistic panorama of the XVIII century engravings are based on the works of the English artist and art theorist William Hogarth (1697-1764).

For the first time in the exhibition are presented illustrations of the famous magazine-newspaper "Illustrated London News" (1842-1890) from the collection of the Krupskaya Astrakhan Regional Library.
