Information technology and culture: Unique editions stored in the museum of the Kazakh city of Semey to be digitized

The Regional History Museum of the city of Semey, one of the oldest museums of Kazakhstan plans to begin work on creating the insurance fund of unique editions. At the moment, the scientific library of the museum contains about 35 thousand copies. It stores rare dictionaries, encyclopedias, the scientists note, the works of research scientists in Russia, Central Asia and China, reports of the Semipalatinsk Statistical Committee, atlases and geographical maps, filing periodicals of late XIX - early XX centuries and etc. Each call to the original provides their gradual destruction, so it was decided to set up an insurance fund that will allow researchers and visitors to get acquainted with the publications, without putting them at risk.

"Our museum contains unique documents, dating back to the XVIII-XIX centuries which saving is our duty, - says specialist of higher degree of the regional history museum of the city of Semey Shynar Sadykov. - Specialists of the museum examined the technical options and features of different models of scanners and chose the updated ElarSKAN A2. On the one hand, the work on it does not require special training and additional training and on the other hand, this equipment allows high-quality digitizing of thick books, as well as large-format editions".

At the initial stage of works in the museum will be organized a temporary storage of scanned materials on the local disk. Subsequently it will be created an electronic fund use, which can be treated workers of institutions, researchers, as well as visitors.
